Journal #299

I will start off this journal with the following quote:

“The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.” – Marcus Aurelius

To me that quote is all about being self-aware, understanding yourself, and doing things that you know and love. Don’t let yourself get caught up with whatever others are doing and forgetting yourself and your whys.

What happened

I came down with a runny nose for no apparent reason with an upper back and neck aches. The latter I knew what caused them. Yesterday, I did spend some time lying down on bed and used my phone. My back and neck weren’t supported properly. As for the runny nose, I don’t know why. Overall, it ruined my day.

Yesterday I mentioned that I will migrate my photos from both my iPhones to the new iPhone X today. That was what I did early in the morning. Of course, something had to go wrong during the migration. In my confused and tired state, wanting to charge my phones, I unplugged my iPhone 7 Plus from my MacBook during the transfer. The photos app on my laptop simply stopped responding and I had to force quit the app and try again. The import was mostly successful One of the photo apparently had some corruption issue and I couldn’t import it. sigh

I joined my parents for breakfast outside and after I came back, I went ahead to watch a movie call Acts of Vengeance on Netflix. I watched it without any expectations and that’s good. Because at the end of the movie, I found it to be pretty good. The story is pretty predictable but I like how they segment the show according to quotes from Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.

I also spent some time in the morning to do some workout with the dumbbells. The side lateral shoulder raise workout actually did some wonders for my neck pain. It helped to loosen up the muscles around my collar bones.

I also spent sometime chatting with a former colleague from my previous company just to catch up on things.

Before I knew it, it was almost lunch and I was feeling both tired and hungry. I went ahead for a quick shower and headed out to the nearby mall for lunch. At first I wanted to eat at Sushi Express but I saw that it was almost full. I didn’t want to sit near any strangers so I went down to the Japanese restaurant call Kabe no Ana. I ordered the following items:

A hot cup of matcha.

A plate of pork sausage and bacon in tomato sauce with cheese.

While waiting for my food to arrive, I actually dozed off because of the medicine I took just prior to leaving the house.

I didn’t loiter around after lunch. I went home straight. On the bus, I actually dozed off once again until I arrived at my bus stop. Once I’m home, I decided to just take a nap.

When I finally woke up my nap, it was already 7pm. I got a little concerned because it may affect my sleep timing later. But there’s nothing else I could do so I left it at that.

While waiting for dinner to be cooked, I went about to do some pushups. And before I knew it, my nose started running again and I went on a sneezing fit. So this definitely isn’t some kind of allergy anymore.

Dinner was a sumptuous spread and I really enjoyed it.

After dinner, I went about watching some videos on YouTube.

How I feel

I feel sick and tired in general.

What am I watching now

I spent much of my night watching YouTube videos. Below is one that that I’ve watched that has more value over the others.

I’m constantly inspired by serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk. I am not an entrepreneur but what he says apply to even employees or workers. Have the patience, enjoy the process of grinding and hustling, being very self-aware and stop complaining and bullshitting yourself. Watching his stuff constantly keep me going.

Journal #298

I will start off the journal with the following quote by Gary Vaynerchuk during his show, #AskGaryVee: One Entrepreneur’s Take on Leadership, Social Media, and Self-Awareness:

“Stop focusing on dumb shit. Don’t be afraid to break things. Don’t be romantic. Don’t take the time to breathe. Don’t aim for perfect. And whatever you do, keep moving. Reread this a few times . . .”

That quote is a reminder for me, for you and for anyone reading this that we should focus on doing and trying stuff out, and not complaining.

What happened

I have been pondering for quite some time now about whether to buy iPhone X. It turned out that I wanted it even after waiting for at least four months since the iPhone X was announced.

So today, I went ahead to get it. I asked a friend to accompany me to the Apple Store at Orchard Road. We met up first at Jurong East MRT station before going on.

Once we reached Orchard Road, we made our way to Sushi Bar at Takashimaya to have our lunch first. Then we made our way to Apple Store.

Once we were there, I spent the first few minutes looking to see what kind of iPhone case they had. I couldn’t find the one I want. Then I went around and talked to my friend about the iMac because he wasn’t sure if he wanted to get it. I told him the difference between the 4K monitors that you can get off the shelf and the one that comes with iMac.

The Mac uses a combination of software and hardware to achieve the insanely good graphics compared to what Windows can do. After some consideration, he somehow decided to get it after the WWDC in June to see if Apple announces any hardware refresh.

Then I went ahead to tell one of the staff that I wanted to get the iPhone X 256GB space grey. After payment, my friend and I made our way to iStudio at Plaza Singapura because I need to get the casing and screen protector. My friend also got himself a new screen protector and asked one of the staff to install for him.

After both of us were done, we made our move, heading home because there was nothing else to do.

Once I reached home, I put down my stuff and clear my desk so that I have a place to work with. I wanted to install the screen protector.

Here are some photos of the phone. Some photos are not that good because I had a hard time getting the camera to focus because of the high gloss, and the lighting in my room is bad.

The rear protector took me a long time to install because of dust keep falling on the display and lints from the cloth I was using to protect my phone from the solid desk. I became frustrated and toss aside the cloth and used scotch tape to pick up the dust particles. Then I went about setting down the screen protector. Then I flip the phone over and install the tempered glass protector. It was much easier to work with it but also there were quite a lot of dust and lint flying around.

After the installation of screen protector is done, I started cleaning up my old iPhone 6S by signing out of apps, and got the phone to backup my WhatsApp messages. I also went ahead to unpair my Apple Watch from my iPhone 7 Plus. Once that’s done, I switched my iPhone 6S off, took out the SIM card and installed it onto the iPhone X and went about setting up the new phone.

Fast forward a couple of hours, I’m finally done with the main migration. I still got a whole bunch of photos I have yet migrate. I will get around that tomorrow.

I didn’t go out for dinner too as I was busy setting up my phone earlier. So I asked my parents to pack some food back for me. While eating my dinner, I went to watch an episode from the show Saga of Tanya the Evil.

What I plan next

I don’t have much plan for tonight except for scheduling a phone call with a friend.

How I feel

I feel superb because I got a new phone. It’s shiny and the first few moments of using it made me feel great. It’s so intuitive and natural.

Daily Journal – Aug 8, 2017

This is my 124th journal.

I woke up earlier today without alarm clock at around 0900hrs. Watched some YouTube video from my favorite youtubers , had a quick morning shower, and then joined my mom to go eat chicken porridge at Jurong West hawker centre.

While eating, I was sweating like mad because I have been eating in air-conditioned environment often. My mom was saying that I have pampered myself too much already. Yeah, I agree. That’s what happen when you feel like a millionaire (not an actual millionaire).

After eating, I had a craving for fried carrot cake and so my mom went to get it. It took more than 15 minutes before it was ready. During that time, the sky started pouring down and my mom forgot to bring in the laundry before we went out. So that’s that.

When my mom finally came back, it was in a packed form. Apparently, the person preparing the food didn’t hear what my mom said about eating in. It didn’t matter as I decided to eat it at home. Then we went to the wet market to get some fishball and egg noodles.

After that we went home. At first we wanted to board bus number 99 but there were a lot of people. So happened that bus number 502 also came and we took that instead. Well, I was under the assumption that the bus will stop at our apartment block but upon checking the details of the bus route, I realized our mistake.

But it’s all good. We alighted at the a mini-shopping mall near our house and went to the supermarket instead. Got more stuff before we made our way home.

Along the way, and running from the rain, I came across two really cute and beautiful cats. I love cats so much, especially when they are all fluffy.

So I went to pet the one of the cats on the head before joining my mom and making our way home.

Upon reaching home, I ate the fried carrot cake and I found it pretty tasty but can’t beat the one that I ate at Ang Mo Kio hawker centre.

After that, brushed my teeth again and I drank some Earl Grey. Then I went to play Cities Skylines for the remaining of the day until dinner time at around 2030hrs. Along the way, my mom went out with my sister to see the doctor as my sister was feeling sick. Then my mom did tried to call me but because I was wearing earphones, playing games, I didn’t know my phone rang. So I missed it. Apparently, my mom wanted to ask me what I wanted to eat for lunch. End up she got me two big meat buns. Ate that for lunch and continue playing.

Here are some night shots of my city:

In the game, I made some rather drastic changes to the roads to ensure optimal traffic flow. I changed the roundabouts and used highways-type roads to force traffic to move in a certain way, taking advantage of the in-game road properties.

For the night, I went to watch a YouTube video by Gary Vaynerchuk. In a way, he’s an inspiration to me and serve as a constant reminder to me that I should continue to be myself and do the things that I enjoy in my own way.

Why the need for reminder? Well, I am someone who has the tendency to emulate or be someone else, is an introvert, and score very high on neuroticism of the five factor model. Since I tend to get overwhelm very easily, I have to learn and practice to do things at my own pace, which I tend to forget or when I feel like I should meet someone else’s expectations.

I have also been watching videos and reading up on High Sensitivity and Elaine Aron’s research. Somehow, I feel like I have some traits of a highly sensitive person. I get hangry, is ticklish, never quite like physical contact with another person, and prefer to work in a dark room or in a cubicle. But then I am rarely in tune with emotions of other people. So I don’t know whether I’m a HSP or is just a neurotic introvert.

Here I conclude my journal for today.
