Updated (20 Aug 2017 1033hrs): Included additional thoughts Annabelle Creation, and removed intent of adding video.
I woke up at around 0730hrs with the intent to go for a 10km run. So I did went for it at around 0830hrs. However, half way through the run, I felt weird and whenever I stopped at traffic lights, my vision almost went white and I felt slightly giddy.
I suspected that my blood sugar has fallen to a certain level and that my body is telling me to stop. And so I did. I walked home and climbed the stairs, activities which are less strenuous than running.
After I came back, I had vegetarian fried noodles with white cabbage, braised beancurd sheets, and fried beancurd. While eating, I binge watched The Defenders, followed by the TV series, Dark Matter, Killjoys, and Zoo.
By then it was almost time for me to leave the house to meet with a friend. We went to Liang Court to have dinner. We ate at a Japanese restaurant and I ordered a 11-type sashimi chirashi, tofu, and green tea.
After that, we went to the Singapore Night Festival where we enjoy light shows and visit the museum which showcases stuff from Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s house, Singapore history.
Here are some pictures I took while I was there.
After that, we decided to watch Annabelle Creation at The Cathay.
The movie Annabelle Creation is one of the better horror movies that I watched in years. While watching it, never had I felt so dreadful. I have watched countless horror shows, played survival horror games, and Annabelle Creation is one of those that make me want to curl up and stop watching. In terms of story, I thought it did a pretty good job too. 4/5 for the movie.
Slept pretty late last night at around 2 am. Woke up at around 1000hrs and decided that I will go to my client’s office this morning.
Arrived at client’s office at around 1215hrs after getting my lunch and coffee to go. Started eating at my desk in the office while chatting with the manager. At around 1230hrs, she went off to gym while I continue to eat and drink my coffee.
After that I got started working on one of the enhancements. I managed to go into the zone and do my work. I also spent quite a fair bit of time doing code refactoring and moving classes around so that they fit into the bounded context.
At around 1700hrs, I felt hungry and decided to redeem my Starbucks free food. Had a grilled chicken sandwich.
Then I look at some news article on the web before deciding to call it a day. Packed up and left the client office at around 1800hrs. I had a dinner appointment with my friends at Clarke Quay. As I was in Raffles Place, I reached my destination in less than half an hour.
I waited for them for about 15 minutes or so. During that time, I walked around the Central Shopping Center listening to Spotify.
When my friends arrived, we made our way to Keisuke Ramen. We ordered the same ramen with rich broth and all toppings. However, we also had customization. One of my friend disliked spring onion while I dislike bamboo.
We chatted while eating as well as after finishing our food. Then we left and settle the bill amongst ourselves. Then we went to the ice cream shop called 320 Below at Central Shopping center. We ended up ordering the same Belgian Dark Chocolate ice cream.
I found the ice cream quite alright. Or maybe there just not much difference you can expect from an ice cream. The chocolate was sufficiently bitter and the price was comparable to other ice cream shops.
After that one of the friend went separate way as he wanted to take cab home. The other friend and I took the west-bound train home. During the journey, we discussed about my intention to be a writer instead of a programmer going forward and what are the things that should be done. At Jurong East, my friend went off to another platform to take another train while I continue on.
I reached home at around 2115hrs, took out my MacBook from my bag, and started doing some stuff. I also went to power up my NAS. At around 2130hrs, I went for a shower. After I came out, prepared a vitamin C drink, and started looking for shows to binge watch.
That’s all for now and I will go on to do some other random stuff.
But wait… let me go watch a video from one of my favorite YouTuber.
Today is Singapore’s birthday. We are celebrating National Day today and it is a public holiday.
I woke up several times to use the toilet and that was pretty disruptive to my sleep. Blame it on my water intake the night before. But still, I think it was a pretty good sleep cause I dreamt a lot. Like a lot. I personally like dreams when I sleep because it shows me that my brain learnt or absorbed quite a lot of stuff during my day and it’s processing those information during my sleep.
After that I started up my MacBook and went about redoing the payment for my AWS account. Amazon sent me an email saying that the payment was successful.
You know what, I think I will keep the AWS account because I think I can play with it when I get enough work to earn enough to pay for it.
After that I watched Shooter (TV Series, Season 2) and some YouTube videos. I will be meeting my friend later for dinner tonight at 1730hrs.
We went to Tanjong Pagar to eat Bak Kut Teh.
After that we went to Holland Village to have some drinks at Starker.
Managed to finish the 2L drink. I did used the chance to talk about some ideas that I have but not easy to implement because of cultural, and resource issues and the solutions to those issues have yet been thoroughly thought out.
Also, during our chat, my friend reminded me of something. Different people has different kind of thing that makes them happy. Some is family. Some is money. Some is watch. Some is reaching certain purchase goal.
For me, I came to realize that my true happiness stems from stress-free environment. And please don’t say everyone loves to be stress-free because I know that’s not true. Some people are happy when they encounter challenges in their lives or work because they get to solve a problem.
So in order to to achieve stress-free I need to work for it. That means I need to put in the effort to get the things, create whatever plans, and implement whatever steps necessary.
To illustrate what I am talking about, I will pick inconvenience. It is a major stressor in my view. That’s why I went to get Apple products and enter the ecosystem. It has a lower inconvenience rate than Windows machine. I choose to eat at restaurants because I don’t like to deal with the chaotic scenes, or the inconvenience of looking for a seat and then queueing for my food in coffee shops and hawker centers. That’s also why I went with minimalism especially when it comes to clothes and material possession. The act of choosing what to wear is an inconvenience to me.
But that also means that I need a certain kind of income that will allow me to do what I have mentioned. Apple products don’t come cheap. Restaurants don’t come cheap. But that doesn’t mean I need to work 24/7 for the kind of money I’m looking for. Because with me adhering to minimalism, I already stop myself from buying unnecessary stuff that don’t add value to my life which in turn ncrease my happiness in any way.
Ok, back to what happened in my life. At around 2130, we are contemplating if want to go home earlier or continue drinking. After more drinking and talking, at around 2220hrs, we decided to call it a day and go home. My friend’s wife was with us and she looked bored. Not very nice to stay on. Beside, they both need to work while I don’t. Unless…well…I choose to go to my client’s office.
Boarded the train at Holland Village, then the west-bound train, and I managed to reach home at around 2319.
I don’t have anything else to update. So I think that’s all for now.
Woke up at around 1000hrs feeling extremely groggy and to the sound of my irritating neighbors doing some hammering work and blasting their music.
Lazed around in bed until about 1100hrs before I actually got up, brushed my teeth, and took an omeprazole pill with a full cup of water. Waited for half an hour before I ate my breakfast.
After that, I was just mingling around in the kitchen chatting with my family members and made a cup of Earl Grey tea.
I am not sure what to do for the rest of the day. Part of me don’t feel like playing any games too.
At around 1430hrs, I decided to go out with my mom and sisters. Had a shower, put on a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, and sneakers before heading out.
Went to IMM first, and trailed behind my sisters and mom as they went looking at shoes. Had lunch at Ichiban Sushi and it was my treat. The bill totaled $113.
I ordered a hot green tea, Agedashi Tofu, and a plate of assorted Sushi.
If you are wondering or have yet to figure it out, yes, I love Japanese food and I find that they are more healthy than traditional Chinese cuisine, or western cuisine.
Then I went to get StarBucks while they went ahead to JCube. I joined them there and walked around some more looking for shoes. Then we went to play at the claw machine and I lent my sister 10 bucks to get a duck stuffed toy.
Then we walked about some more at Jem before we head home.
Well, my mom decided not to cook after reaching home and so we will be heading out again for dinner. Until then, I will focus on doing some writing.
There wasn’t enough time for me to do any proper writing since it takes time to even get the gears moving.
My family and I went to a nearby Tze Char store to have dinner. After the dinner, we went home to the weather starting to letting go of rain. It was a light drizzle but since it’s a short walk from home so it didn’t matter.
For the rest of the night, considering that I had quite a lot of caffeinated drinks today, I think I will do some light writing and watching YouTube video.
Slept at 0200hrs and woke up around 1030hrs. Went through the morning routine, has breakfast and decided to play a few hours of Cities:Skylines.
Previously I mentioned something about my city was having severe traffic issue and that the commercial zones are not getting the goods from the factories. I managed to fix it by adding more six-lane road linking the commercial zones with the factories and converting two-directional roads into one one-directional. This force the traffic to move in certain direction, therefore optimising the routes.
My city was also suffering from massive deficits in terms of tax to expenses. So I raised the taxes for all zones to 11%. Now with the commercial zone mostly getting their goods and higher tax, my city treasury now is adding money instead of bleeding money. I will continue to tweak my city to improve things and maybe experiment with some stuff.
I have also grew my city in size by adding more residential, commercial, and office zones. You can see the screenshots showing the difference. Although they are taken from different perspective, if you looked close enough, you can see what’s different.
This is a before screenshot.
This is the after screenshot.
Later in the afternoon, I went for the appointment with the hospital for psychology review. It was to determine if I was indeed suffering from bipolar disorder. The conclusion was that I wasn’t suffering from bipolar. Good thing. Now I just need to work with my psychiatrist on the depression and monitor my mood swings until the next review in three months time.
Later in the evening, I met with my friend for a movie, War for the Planet of the Apes. Before that, we had dinner at Sushi Tei. I can’t say the same for my friend but for me, it has been quite a while since I last ate there. Upon walking in, I noticed that there were iPads for diners to make and confirm their orders. That itself is a good thing. It helps save time and definitely make everything more convenient rather than waiting for the staff to take order.
As for the movie itself, I will give a quick review and will try not spoil the movie for you. I found it quite watchable but not to the point where I would re-watch it. There was a decent amount of action scene, character building, and some emotional scene. The movie ended with a bang followed by a decently happy ending. I give the movie a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
As before, I will split this journal into two parts.
July 15, 2017
I went to bed at around 0400hrs and woke up at around 1100hrs to a rainy morning. Did my morning routine and powered on my desktop to play some games. Had my breakfast of fried noodle, hash brown and Chinese sausage.
I played Cities: Skylines for the next few hours until I lost track of time. I was spending quite a lot of time on building up my cities and dealing with the repercussion of me making mistakes.
Had a meeting with my friends at 1630hrs and we planned to eat at the Man Man Unagi restaurant located at 1 Keong Saik Road, #01-01, Singapore 089109. You can get there by taking a train to Outram Park station.
When we got there at around 1720hrs, the queue was already pretty long. We joined the queue. Here is the entrance, after the first batch of people went in.
We chatted and we only managed to get into the restaurant at around 1915.
Our drinks came first and all of us ordered the same thing, the Say Yes Cocktail, costing $12.90 each. The drink has the taste of rose/lychee with some light weight sake in it. It makes for a unique drink and I quite like it.
I ordered the large Unatama, which cost $32.80 each.
My friends ordered the Hitsumabushi which cost $26.80 each.
We also ordered the Shirayaki, which is a side dish, costing $25.80 each.
We also ordered two plates of 3-piece tamagoyaki, costing $12.80 each.
We managed to finish most of our food. In my case, I couldn’t finish it all. Wasted one slice of unagi but then if I continue to eat it, I would have vomited out everything. I was that full from all the side dishes and drinks.
By the time we were done, it was already 2000hrs. The final cost of our dinner was about ~$192.
I would definitely recommend it to my friends. The unagi is soft and taste great unlike those unagi from Japanese restaurant like Ichiban Boshi or Sushi Tei. However due to the price tag and long waiting time, it may only be suitable to eat once every few months unless you have a big pocket and truly enjoy eating unagi.

Today I didn’t do much. As before, I spent quite a lot of time playing Cities: Skylines. Today, it was mostly me trying to deal with death waves. The worse that I have got was that I lost 30k of my city’s population due to emigration and death. Part of the emigration was caused by the landfills being 100% full, causing all garbage to pile up. I had to add more landfills while emptying out the existing ones.
I went for my first 10 kilometer run today and here is the proof.
Tomorrow will be the day I went to sign the contract for my new job and I also got some of the necessary documents for the HR to see.
I will be splitting this journal into two parts, covering the events that happened yesterday and today. You can think of it as a summary of my weekend.
Jul 08, 2017
I met my friends for Spiderman: Homecoming at 0950 at Jurong Point. Decided to have breakfast at Subway and reached it at around 0930. At first, I thought that we were meeting at 0955 for a movie that’s much later. Turns out, my friend intended to watch the movie at 9.55am. My bad. So I had to eat fast. However, it wasn’t until 0941 before it was my turn to order. The queue was not that long but slow. Every single person in front of me was ordering multiple shares.
After I was done eating, I rushed up and met my friends at around 0950. Needed my morning coffee fix and so I ordered black coffee from the cinema’s food counter.
The movie itself was slightly longer than 2 hours. Generally, it’s a fun movie to watch and has the same quality found in other Marvel’s movie. It’s definitely better than the preceding reboot made by Sony in many way.
After the movie, we had lunch at the Legendary Hong Kong restaurant (seriously though the name sound riduclous).
Ordered a whole bunch of food that we could barely finish. For me, I had Ice Lemon Tea, Fried Rice with luncheon meat and egg, Crystal Skin Shrimp Dumpling.
Egg Tarts, Carrot Cake with Fried Shrimps, and Custard buns were the extra stuff that we ordered to share.
Then we went for desert, which I didn’t take any picture of but it was Pomelo with Mango on ice.
We made our way home after that and for me it was just in time for me to do my first ever 9 kilometer run as recorded by my Apple Watch.
After the run, had a shower. I was super tired and decided to take a short nap. Told my parents that I didn’t want to go out anymore. So my dad packed food for me before they went out.
I spent the rest of the evening watching tv shows and did a little light gaming, playing Cities: Skylines.
Jul 09, 2017
Woke up around 1100 the next day. I slept really late last night. So did my usual morning routine and continued playing Cities: Skylines in the morning.
I won’t say I’m very good at playing these kind of games. Also, I am not that creative or have the patience to actually do things like what other players did. E.g. reconstructing their home city or town.
But I managed to build up my city up to a decently big size without having me going to deficit for longer than 1 in-game week. That deficit happened because of some in-game power issue. A large section of my city was without power due to an accidental destruction of the connecting electrical lines causing lack of water supply and buildings simply stopped working. Well, I was remodeling the roads and forgot about my power grid. Other than that, my city was constantly bringing me 10k to 30k worth of taxes.
Took some screenshots.
Before I knew it, it was about 1430 and it was time for my lunch. I went to Jurong Point again to eat at Sushi Express. Had 11 plates worth of Sashimi and Sushi. Then I went to grab some supplements and toiletries before I ordered a grande-sized Ice Americano.
Made my way home at around 1730 and decided to watch some movie. Rented the movie call LIFE on iTunes and watched it on my Apple TV.
After that, I had my dinner and here I am writing this journal. Along the way, I watched some youtube video on Starcraft 2 and reading its Wikia.
Tomorrow is another round of SIT. Tuesday too. Personally, I’m super bored by the whole thing.
Did I mention that I actually got a job offer from ST Electronics? It’s a .NET Software Developer role on a two-year contract basis. I don’t know if I want to take it. A big part of me still want that career break. Another part of me is thinking if I reject it, I won’t another offer anymore. But logically, this kind of fear is unfounded.
Anyway, let me lay it out what I’m thinking about.
It’s a .NET position and I’m more proficient in Java considering that was what I have been doing all these while for my career. Since the project has a deadline of six months, that means I need to pick up a whole bunch of unfamiliar stuff within weeks. I’m not sure if I can do that kind of ramping up. After all, I’m still suffering from the effects of burnout. I mean I have not been having any desire to do any work anymore…I’m even contemplating about whether I want to do any work for my client; Yeah, they raised some bugs with the application that I’m maintaining and in case you have forgotten, I’m a freelancer.
A large part of me is saying that I no longer want to go into the situation where I simply can’t tune work out when I reach home. And then repeating the whole cycle of burnout. Call me avoidant or childish or whatever. My health and mental well-being is more important and I’m still working through my mental toughness and resilient.
My other priority is that I just want to go home to do my own projects, my own things after work and not think about what’s next for my main job. I mean it’s naive to think that way, but for me work is just a way for me to earn some money to survive and enjoy myself. I have no intention of burning through my health or happiness just to earn the extra dollar or climb the corporate ladder.
I have one more day to consider the offer before I need to make any kind of commitment and the company send me the actual physical contract to sign. I will think about it more tomorrow. But for now, I’m hovering around 60% rejecting the offer.
